Broken Promises

I heard a joke today about a man who died and met St. Peter and the pearly gates.  St. Peter told him he could pick whether he wanted to go to heaven or hell.  He asked if he could look over both before deciding, and St. Peter agreed.  So the man took the elevator down to hell.  The doors opened and it was  a beautiful sunny day and he stepped out on to the most wonderful golf course.  He played a round and ate dinner a beautiful clubhouse where he could choose anything he wanted to eat.  After his dinner took the elevator up to heaven and had a look around.  I was also very beautiful, he looked around, and even ride on a cloud.  Afterwards he went back to St. Peter and said, " I think I am going to choose hell", so St. Peter escorted him to the elevator and he went down.  When the doors opened, a barren hot desert, no water, blazing sun greeted him.  A devil met him there and he asked what happened to the beautiful golf course?  The devil replied "That was when we were campaigning, now you have voted"
I don't mean to compare the Dems to the devil, this joke could be told after a Republican win as well;  but as conservatives, we shouldn't be getting into the game with the Dems about promises and what we are going to give people and do for them.  Conservatism is about smaller govermment, keeping it out of the way so Americans can be successful in whatever they choose.  Bush moved away from this with prescription drugs and the bailout, etc. etc.   If Repulicans continue to play the promises game, they will continue to lose, because the Dems will always be able to promise more, that is what they are about.  Not only that, but our government will go bankrupt, or our taxes so high that it will be difficult for the economy to recover.   Conservatives must articulate how bigger government, hurts, not helps, no matter who's in charge or how sincere they are about "change" and making things better.
